London Weighting (£3,260) vs London Allowance (£6,819): how the £10,079 works

Met and City of London payslips split London location pay into two lines. Both rose by 3.5% on 1 September 2026, but they are treated differently for pension and tax thresholds:

1. Pensionable pay (Annex F)

London Weighting: £3,260/yr (£272/mo)

Counts towards your PPS 2015 pensionable pay. Your pension contribution (12.88%, 13.88% or 14.22%) is deducted on basic pay + £3,260, and it increases the career-average pension you accrue each year.

2. Non-pensionable allowance (Annex U)

London Allowance: £6,819/yr (£568/mo)

Paid to officers appointed on or after 1 September 1994 (LA1 + LA2). Taxed and subject to National Insurance, so it adds directly to take-home without a 13%+ pension deduction, and is counted as contractual income by most mortgage lenders.

Higher-rate tax impact in London: Because the £6,819London Allowance is taxable without any pension deduction coming off it, a Met constable crosses the £50,270 higher-rate (40%) income tax threshold much earlier than an officer outside London. At Pay Point 7, a Met constable's gross pay is £62,093 and taxable pay after pension is £41,851 — meaning the top -£8,419 of regular pay (and all overtime) is taxed at 40% (plus 2% NI above the Upper Earnings Limit).
