This models the Police Pension Scheme 2015 (CARE) — the scheme most serving officers are in. Figures are estimates for guidance, not a formal benefit statement. If you are still partly in PPS 1987/2006, or covered by the McCloud remedy, your actual pension will differ — ask your force pension team for a personal projection.

Frequently asked questions
How much do Police Scotland officers pay into their pension in 2026/27?
Every member of the Scottish Police Pension Scheme 2015 pays a flat 13.7% of pensionable pay, regardless of rank or salary. Unlike England and Wales — which uses three salary tiers (12.88%, 13.88% and 14.22%) — Scotland has a single flat rate administered by the Scottish Public Pensions Agency (SPPA). Because contributions are deducted before income tax, Scottish officers above the £43,663 higher-rate threshold receive 42% tax relief on the slice above £43,662, cutting the real net cost to around 7.95% of pay.
How much does Police Scotland (SPA) contribute to my pension?
The employer contribution rate for the Scottish Police Pension Scheme is 38.7% of your pensionable pay (effective from 1 April 2024 following the scheme actuarial valuation). For a Constable at the top of the scale (£54,597), Police Scotland contributes £21,129 a year on top of your own 13.7% contribution.
How is the Police Scotland 2015 CARE pension calculated?
The CARE formula in Scotland is identical to England, Wales and Northern Ireland: each scheme year (1 April to 31 March) you build up an annual pension worth 1/55.3 (1.81%) of that year's pensionable pay, and every April while you remain a serving officer your built-up pot is revalued by Consumer Prices Index (CPI) inflation plus 1.25%. At retirement you can commute part of your pension into a tax-free lump sum at £12 of cash for every £1 of annual pension surrendered.
What is the retirement age for Police Scotland officers?
Under the Police Pension Scheme (Scotland) Regulations 2015, Normal Pension Age for active serving officers is 60 (fixed by section 10(2) of the Public Service Pensions Act 2013). You can retire from active service and draw an actuarially reduced pension from age 55 (reduced by roughly 4.5% per year below 60; police schemes are exempt from the April 2028 rise in minimum pension age to 57). If you leave Police Scotland before 55 without drawing your pension, your deferred pension is payable unreduced only from your State Pension Age (66–68).
Who administers the Police Scotland pension and issues Remediable Service Statements (McCloud)?
The Scottish Police Pension Scheme is administered by the Scottish Public Pensions Agency (SPPA — pensions.gov.scot/police). SPPA issues Annual Benefit Statements and McCloud Remediable Service Statements (RSS) covering the 1 April 2015 to 31 March 2022 remedy period for officers who joined on or before 31 March 2012 under the legacy 1987 or 2006 Scottish police pension schemes.
