Pay periods

Working hours

Police officers are full-time on a 40-hour week, so both default to 40. Working full time? Leave them equal. Part-time? Lower “your hours” (and set the full-time week to your force's standard if it isn't 40).

Police Scotland pay questions

How much do Police Scotland officers earn in 2026/27?

From 1 April 2026, a Police Scotland constable starts on £34,001 (£2,026/month take-home), rises to £36,995 after one year and reaches £54,597 (£3,020/month) at the top of the scale. Sergeants earn £56,455 to £61,036 and inspectors £67,491 to £74,853.

What was the Police Scotland pay rise for 2026/27?

3.5% on 1 April 2026 across all ranks and the related allowances. It is the second year of the two-year deal agreed by the Police Negotiating Board for Scotland (PNBS circular 2025/09), after the April 2025 rise.

How is Police Scotland take-home pay different from England & Wales?

Three things change your net pay: higher basic salaries at every rank, Scottish income tax (six bands instead of three) and a flat 13.7% pension contribution to the Scottish Public Pensions Agency instead of the tiered 12.88%–14.22% rates in England and Wales.

Why might a Scottish officer pay a 50% marginal rate on overtime?

The Scottish higher rate (42%) starts at £43,663 of taxable income, while employee National Insurance only drops from 8% to 2% above £50,270. Between those two points, each extra pound of overtime loses 42% in tax plus 8% in NI.

How do I join Police Scotland, and what is the starting salary?

Applicants sit the Police Scotland Entrance Test (PSET), a fitness test, an assessment day and vetting. New constables start on £34,001 on commencing service and move to £36,995 after one year. Our sister site Join The Cops, run by the same publisher, prepares candidates for the PSET and assessment day.
