This models the Police Pension Scheme 2015 (CARE) — the scheme most serving officers are in. Figures are estimates for guidance, not a formal benefit statement. If you are still partly in PPS 1987/2006, or covered by the McCloud remedy, your actual pension will differ — ask your force pension team for a personal projection.

£

Your basic pensionable pay (plus pensionable allowances such as London Weighting). Overtime is not pensionable.

Optional — fills the pay box above from a published scale. The pension scheme is identical UK-wide; only the pay differs.

For a precise figure, enter your accrued pension from your benefit statement under “Assumptions” below.

The earliest you can draw a reduced PPS 2015 pension is 55 (the police scheme is exempt from the April 2028 rise to 57).

Future inflation and pay growth are unknown — these are assumptions, not guarantees. The defaults (2%) are deliberately conservative.

Lump sum options at retirement

PPS 2015 has no automatic lump sum, but you can give up £1 of annual pension for £12 of tax-free cash (12:1 commutation).

Maximum pension

£32,715/yr

No lump sum taken

Maximum tax-free lump sum

Figures in today's money. The maximum tax-free lump sum is capped at 25% of the capital value of your benefits (HMRC). Whether to commute depends on your circumstances — consider regulated pension advice before deciding.

At £43,038 pensionable pay you currently contribute 13.88% (≈ £5,974/yr). Your force adds roughly 35.3% on top (£15,192/yr) — money you would never see in a private-sector role.

Your pension building up, year by year

Each year you lock in 1/55.3 of your pensionable pay, and the whole pot is revalued by CPI + 1.25%. Totals are in today's money and before any early-retirement reduction.

How the PSNI Pension Scheme 2015 works (and why NITA is excluded)

Established under the Police Pensions Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2015 and administered by the Northern Ireland Policing Board (NIPB) Police Pension Branch, the PSNI 2015 scheme mirrors the England and Wales CARE rules — with one critical local distinction on pensionable pay:

Employee contribution

12.88% – 14.22%

Tiered on basic pay only (NITA excluded)

Annual accrual rate

1 / 55.3

1.81% of pensionable basic pay banked per year

In-service revaluation

CPI + 1.25%

Applied every April while serving in the PSNI

Normal pension age

Age 60

Or from age 55 with actuarial reduction

Why NITA (£4,283/yr) is not pensionable: The Northern Ireland Transitional Allowance is an allowance paid on top of basic pay, not basic pensionable pay. That means you do not pay 12.88%–14.22% pension contributions on your £4,283 NITA (saving you around £49/month in pension deductions), but NITA also does not build up any 1/55.3th pension entitlement. When using the calculator above, enter your basic pay (or use the Northern Ireland rank quick-pick, which excludes NITA automatically).

PSNI pension contributions & annual pension built by rank

Because pension contributions are taken under a net pay arrangement before income tax is calculated, you automatically receive UK income tax relief at your marginal rate (20% basic rate up to £50,270, or 40% higher rate above £50,270). Notice that when you include the taxable £4,283NITA, a top-of-scale PSNI constable's total gross income (£54,539) crosses into the 40% tax band — increasing the tax relief on your pension contributions.

PSNI Pension Branch (Northern Ireland Policing Board)

Unlike forces in England and Wales (which outsource administration to XPS or Equiniti) or Police Scotland (administered by SPPA), PSNI pensions are managed by the Northern Ireland Policing Board (NIPB) Police Pension Branch.

The branch handles active Annual Benefit Statements (ABS), retirement quotations, commutation elections, ill-health retirement assessments, and McCloud Remediable Service Statements:

  • Administrator: Police Pension Branch, Police Administration Division, Northern Ireland Policing Board
  • Address: Waterside Tower, 31 Clarendon Road, Clarendon Dock, Belfast BT1 3BG
  • Pension payroll: Pension increases are applied each April in line with the September CPI rate (see police pension increase 2026).

1988 RUC/PSNI scheme, 2006 scheme & McCloud remedy

Northern Ireland had two final-salary schemes before the 2015 CARE scheme opened on 1 April 2015:

  • 1988 Scheme (RUC / PSNI Pensions Regulations 1988): The Northern Ireland equivalent of the England & Wales 1987 scheme (30-year fast-accrual final-salary pension, maximum 2/3rds of final salary).
  • 2006 New Police Pension Scheme (NPPS NI): 35-year final-salary scheme for officers joining between 6 April 2006 and 31 March 2015.
  • McCloud 2015 Remedy (1 Apr 2015 – 31 Mar 2022): Under the Police Pensions (Remediable Service) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2023, eligible officers in service on or before 31 March 2012 choose at retirement between legacy (1988/2006) or 2015 CARE benefits for the 7-year remedy period. All service from 1 April 2022 onwards builds up in the 2015 scheme.

PSNI pension — frequently asked questions

How does the PSNI pension scheme work?

All serving Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) officers accrue benefits in the PSNI Police Pension Scheme 2015, a Career Average Revalued Earnings (CARE) scheme established under the Police Pensions Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2015. Each year you bank 1/55.3 of your pensionable basic pay, and your banked pot is revalued each April by CPI + 1.25% while you remain a serving officer.

Is the Northern Ireland Transitional Allowance (NITA) pensionable?

No. The Northern Ireland Transitional Allowance (NITA — currently £4,283 a year) is subject to income tax and National Insurance, but it is strictly non-pensionable. Your employee pension contribution (12.88%–14.22%) and the 1/55.3 annual pension you build up are calculated on your basic salary alone, excluding NITA.

What are the PSNI pension contribution rates in 2026/27?

The PSNI 2015 scheme uses the same three-tier employee contribution structure as England and Wales: 12.88% on annual pensionable pay up to £37,035 (new constables), 13.88% on pensionable pay between £37,036 and £79,587 (most constables, sergeants, inspectors and chief inspectors), and 14.22% above £79,587 (superintendents and chief officers). Contributions are deducted under a net pay arrangement before income tax.

Who administers the PSNI pension (PSNI Pension Branch)?

The PSNI pension schemes (1988 RUC/PSNI scheme, 2006 scheme and 2015 CARE scheme) are administered in-house by the Police Pension Branch of the Northern Ireland Policing Board (NIPB) Police Administration Division, based at Waterside Tower, 31 Clarendon Road, Clarendon Dock, Belfast BT1 3BG.

What is the retirement age for a PSNI officer?

Under the 2015 scheme, the Normal Pension Age (NPA) for an active PSNI officer is 60. Serving officers can choose to draw their 2015 pension early from age 55 with an actuarial reduction for each year taken before 60. Officers with legacy service in the 1988 RUC/PSNI scheme or 2006 scheme retain earlier access to their legacy benefits, including 1988-scheme service rolled back under the McCloud remedy for April 2015 to March 2022.

How does the McCloud remedy work for PSNI officers?

Under the Public Service Pensions and Judicial Offices Act 2022 and the Police Pensions (Remediable Service) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2023, eligible PSNI officers who were serving on or before 31 March 2012 had their service between 1 April 2015 and 31 March 2022 rolled back into their legacy 1988 or 2006 scheme. At retirement, the NIPB Police Pension Branch issues a Remediable Service Statement (RSS) allowing you to choose between legacy or 2015 scheme benefits for that 7-year window (Deferred Choice Underpin).
