Important Payslip Note for WYP Officers: Pre-Tax Federation Subscriptions

Unlike most provincial forces in England and Wales, West Yorkshire Police (alongside the Metropolitan Police) operates a pre-tax (net pay) payroll arrangement for Police Federation (PFEW) subscriptions, explicitly noted on HMRC's List 3 directory of approved professional bodies. Because WYP payroll deducts your Federation subscriptions before PAYE income tax is calculated, you already receive automatic 20% or 40% tax relief every month. Do not submit a duplicate P87 claim for Federation subs — WYP officers should only claim the £140/year flat-rate uniform cleaning tax allowance via our Police Tax Relief (P87) guide →

See who runs my police pension.
  • West Yorkshire Police Federation: Based at 14–16 Eastmoor Road, Wakefield (WF1 3RZ), administering the WYP Group Insurance Scheme. Remember that WYP Federation subscriptions already receive pre-tax payroll relief.
  • Treatment Centres & Benevolent Fund: WYP officers belong to the northern catchment for The Police Treatment Centres (St Andrews, Harrogate HG2 0AD) and the West Yorkshire Police Benevolent Fund.

West Yorkshire Police salary — frequently asked questions

How much does a West Yorkshire Police officer earn in 2026/27?

From 1 September 2026, a West Yorkshire Police (WYP) constable starts on £32,256 a year (£1,952/month net after PPS 2015 pension, income tax and National Insurance) across all entry routes (PCEP, PCDA and DHEP). After six years' service (Pay Point 7), a WYP constable earns £52,014 gross (£2,942/month net).

Does West Yorkshire Police pay a regional location allowance?

No. Under Police Regulations 2003, only London and the eight South East ring forces pay a regional location allowance. West Yorkshire Police pays the national England and Wales PRRB salary scales, supplemented by the 10% Unsocial Hours Allowance (between 8pm and 6am), £35 On-Call Allowance, overtime, and Targeted Variable Pay (TVP) where applicable.

Can West Yorkshire Police officers claim HMRC tax relief on Police Federation subscriptions?

No — because you already receive it automatically! Along with the Metropolitan Police, West Yorkshire Police is explicitly noted on HMRC List 3 as operating a pre-tax (net pay) payroll arrangement for Police Federation (PFEW) subscriptions. That means tax relief on your Federation subs is already given through your monthly WYP payslip, so you should only claim the £140/year flat-rate uniform cleaning allowance from HMRC.

Who administers the West Yorkshire Police pension scheme?

Unusually among large metropolitan forces, the West Yorkshire Pension Fund (WYPF, based at Aldermanbury House, Bradford BD1 2ST, online via wypf.org.uk MyPension) administers BOTH the 2015 Police Pension Scheme (PPS 2015) for warranted WYP police officers AND the Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS) for WYP civilian police staff and PCSOs.

How much does a West Yorkshire Police PCSO earn in 2026/27?

West Yorkshire Police PCSOs sit on WYP Scale 4 (SCP 11–16) with a basic salary of £27,204 rising over four years to £29,859, plus a 14% shift allowance and ~12%–13.89% weekend working enhancement — bringing a full-time shift-working PCSO package to approximately £33,500–£37,000 a year.

How much does the Chief Constable of West Yorkshire Police earn?

As the fourth-largest police force in England and Wales (~6,198 FTE officers), West Yorkshire Police sits in Force Weighting Band 2 (weighting 8.0–9.0) under Home Office Determination Annex F. On the 1 September 2026 scales (+3.5%), the Band 2 statutory spot salary is £227,364 for Chief Constable John Robins QPM DL and £181,890 for the Deputy Chief Constable (subject to ±10% flexibility set by the Mayor of West Yorkshire).
