Civil Nuclear Constabulary pay — frequently asked questions

What is the starting salary for a Civil Nuclear Constabulary (CNC) police officer?

Every operational recruit joining the Civil Nuclear Constabulary trains as an Authorised Firearms Officer (AFO) during their Initial Foundation Phase (IFP). CNC basic pay aligns with the national England & Wales police pay scales: on the 2026/27 scale (from 1 September 2026), a newly appointed Constable starts at £32,256 and progresses across seven pay points to £52,014 after six years' service. Officers posted to qualifying South East sites (such as Culham, Harwell or Dungeness) receive an additional £2,000/year South East Allowance.

Why is CNC take-home pay higher than a Home Office force on the same basic salary?

While CNC basic pay tracks the England & Wales Winsor scale, CNC officers participate in the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) Combined Pension Scheme (CPS) / CNC pension arrangements rather than the Home Office 2015 Police Pension Scheme. Whereas Home Office police officers contribute 13.44% of pay, the average member contribution rate in the UKAEA Combined Pension Scheme is around 8.2% (alongside a 20.7% employer contribution). Lower employee pension deductions mean higher monthly net take-home pay at every rank.

Do CNC officers get an extra payment for carrying a firearm?

No separate firearms supplement is added on top of basic pay, because being an Authorised Firearms Officer (AFO) is the core operational role of every uniformed CNC officer under the Energy Act 2004. However, specialist tactical units (such as the Strategic Escort Group — SEG — and Marine Escort Group — MEG — protecting nuclear materials in transit) attract substantial overtime, deployment and overnight allowances.

Who represents Civil Nuclear Constabulary officers?

Federated ranks (Constable to Chief Inspector) in the CNC are represented by the Civil Nuclear Police Federation (CNPF), created under the Energy Act 2004, while civilian support staff are represented by Prospect and GMB.
